Rev. George F. Aschenbrenner

Pastor of St. James at Sag Bridge from 1970 to 1987

Father Aschenbrenner became pastor on January 3, 1970, he was previously the pastor of St. Aloysious Church in Chicago. During his priestly ministry he also served in St. Philomena, St. Matthew, Immaculate Conception, Sacred Heart and St. Liborius in Steger

 Father Aschenbrenner's time was spend doing several renovation project but unlike most parish pastors Fr. Aschenbrenner worked side by side with the parish volunteers swinging a hammer. In the fall of 1970 that started with the remodeling of Sag Hall which wasn't completed until 1973. The other large project was the renovation of the church in the fall of 1980. Father also worked side by side with parish volunteers to finish the rectory basement and remodel the rectory upstairs during his years at St. James at Sag Bridge.

Among the other accomplishments under Father Aschenbrenner's time at St. James were the formation of the Historical Society of St. James at Sag Bridge Church. The installation of the main gates from Western Electric Hawthorne Plant, and the stairs to the parking lot.

Father Aschenbrenner was also responsible for the Sesquicentennial Celebration in 1983 to commutate the 150th Anniversary which included three special masses, a parish cookbook, and special picnic.

After 18 years as pastor, Father Aschenbrenner reached the mandatory retirement age of 70 and ended his term on December 31, 1987.

After retiring, he served as a chaplain at Alvernia Manor, a Lemont retirement home and would still visit and say mass at St. James at Sag Bridge.

Visitor to St. James at Sag Bridge will notice Father Aschenbrenner's tomb stone as it is on the north side of the main walk to the church.
